Pump arrived, planning my box...

#1 Post by Matt » Mon Feb 11, 2008 7:59 pm

So my March pump arrived this week, and I'm stoked. New in the box with a warranty card and everything. Nicely packaged too: double-boxed with air packets between and foam sandwiching the pump inside the inner box.

It made opening it feel like Christmas morning or something. :)

I just hit the army surplus shop, and picked up a .50 cal ammo box, which will be perfect for a housing to protect the pump and I think I'm going to rig it up also with an R/C switch like Bill's pump box and a GFCI outlet, to protect it from surges, etc.

I'd love to get a tip from Bill or anyone else on where you got your R/C switch for it, and any other tips on wiring this thing up, as I need to do so soon. I'm also wondering if a PC cooling fan wouldn't be a good idea to mount in the side of the box to blow cool air on the motor. You guys with March pumps had any issues with heat?

Anyway, I'm jonsin' to get this done... thanks in advance for any tips and advice.

Well, first thing to remember is that the motor must have support. I have mine mounted so it is resting on the electrical box, but I found that I sometimes prefer to lay the box on its side. To do this I crammed some ridged Styrofoam in there to add support if I laid it down (making sure not to block the air vents of course).

Here you can see the remote I got, or Sean got for me really. He found them at Ace hardware I think and they were being sold as Christmas tree remotes. I plug this into a 15 amp breaker power strip. I know, it's not a GFCI, but its better than nothing.

To help me w/ the holes I was drilling I removed the head and put the screws back in and covered the screw heads with ink from a Sharpie and pressed that up against the box (lazy-man's jig) and drilled out the black marks. Only took some minor reaming to get them to fit. You would think that the screw positions would be in a up-down-left-right configuration in respects to the the electric box, but its not, it a few cm off.

Now that I've completed the box, I wish I would have mounted the pump higher up in the box. I have to use buckets to raise the box up if I want to have the pump running in a vertical configuration or the QD will be too close to the ground to allow you to hook a hose up to it. Think of all angles when doing this project, I wish I did.

and yes, I'm pulling straight off the tun, but that's for another discussion Andy

Good luck Matt!
Thanks!

You wouldn't want to use a PC cooling fan unless you wire it with a separate DC power supply. The fan is DC and you could have a potential electrical hazard if you use the same AC power source that will run the pump.
Plugging into a GFCI is necessary when working around water so you see them in kitchens and bathrooms in most modern homes. If you don't have a GFCI to plug into you can either buy a portable one or, if you are savvy, rewire one of your existing outlets.
I would recommend getting a few brews in with your pump before finding a permanent setting for it. You may appreciate the "tinkering room" you allowed yourself. After getting acquainted with my new pump I'd have to say it's been the single best improvement to my brewing process. Let me know if you need a hand with wiring or anything else that may come up.

My sincere thanks for the advice guys. Learning from others' experience is what a guild like ours is all about, so I really appreciate it. I definitely appreciate little tips like mounting the pump higher in the box, as well as offers to help with the wiring. I'm fairly comfortable with electricity, but a $100 investment is big enough for me to gladly accept advice on the wiring. I'll probably take you up on that Lee. :)

Tomorrow I've got classes all day, so it won't happen then, but Wednesday I plan on wire-brushing and re-painting the box, finding mounting brackets and an RC switch and such, so that I'm ready to mount and wire everything. If you'll PM me your phone number Lee, I'll give you a call to set something up.

Thanks to you both.
